In the age of social media and e-tailers, many fashion businesses choosedirect-to-consumer as their main sales strategy. However, wholesaledistribution still plays an integral part for leading brands since having key retailers and reputable stockists boostsbrand awareness. Multi-brand stores remain a shopping destinationand can bring unique opportunities which otherwise could be difficult topenetrate in mature markets.

Whether you are an online seller or the owner of a brick-and-mortar clothing boutique, you are up against a lot of competition. There are a lot of heavy hitters in the fashion industry (Amazon is on track to become the top U.S. retailer of apparel by the end of this year) and making a name for yourself and building a sustainable strategy is no easy task.

When it comes to building a successful fashion business, you need to know how to source your products inexpensively, sell them quickly and build a loyal fanbase of customers who love your brand and the products you sell. In the fashion industry, sourcing inexpensive products typically means purchasing either wholesale or private label clothing.

When you fill your shop with private label clothing, you are working directly with a manufacturer rather than a wholesaler. The clothing may be produced by a well-known manufacturer, but it will be labeled with your own private label.

Both wholesale and private label garments are sold at prices that are lower than retail, so either option is good in terms of buying apparel on a budget. Buying private label clothing may be less expensive upfront in some instances because it involves buying directly from the manufacturer rather than purchasing through a wholesaler. Keep in mind, though, that in order to get a great deal on clothing directly from the manufacturer, you will need to purchase massive quantities. If you just need 20 shirts in a particular style for a single store, it may be cheaper to purchase them from a wholesaler that has low minimum order quantities.

If you are in the market for wholesale clothing for your business, we can help. At The Adair Group, we carry a wide range of wholesale apparel from top brands for men, women and kids. We strive to sell high-quality products at the lowest prices in the industry, and we would be more than happy to help with your wholesale apparel needs. Browse our selection today or reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns.

Informa Markets Fashion has teamed up with the global forecasting agency Fashion Snoops to present, The Fashion Tech Series, a multi-part series where we demystify the latest technological developments shaping the year ahead, from artificial intelligence to Web3; highlight specific success stories from those already forging a new path forward; and how these new opportunities can be applied to the key areas of the fashion vertical: Sourcing + Supply Chain, Design, Retail, and Marketing.

In the meantime, the best thing she can do is educate her customers about precisely why her new hand-embroidered organic cotton dress costs $550. Stanley openly shared the cost breakdown here: $24 covers the organic cotton and dyes; the intricate handwork comes in at $48, because it took an embroiderer a full day to make the dress; production labor, including sewing, pattern-making, sampling, finishing, and packing, was $48; trims, including the labels, hang tag, and dust bag, were $5; shipping was $8; and duties were $24. Her total cost came to $157, and in order to keep the final price lower, she took just a 1.59x margin, bumping the wholesale price to $250. (This means Stanley would earn $93 in profit when a store orders the dress.) With the typical retail margin of 2.2x, the final price tag on the rack in a boutique is $550.

In order to effectively serve the marketplace, the consumer-fashion industry is split into two complimentary segments of brands and retailers. Brands focus on designing, producing, and delivering great products to the marketplace that engage their target demographic. Retailers focus on optimizing their brand assortment, inventory quantities, and demand generation that maximizes product / market fit for each retail location or property.

However, the simple world of 2x keystone markup is ending as ERP and IT Systems enable new insights in all aspects of the retail business that were previously abstractions based on averages. Today, most brands are under considerable pricing pressure from retailers to markup wholesale price at less than 2x to provide the retailer with the margin required to profitably sell the product. Retailers are marking up wholesale price 2.1x to 2.4x to compensate for inventory markdown & return risks that delivers the overall margin required to achieve the profitability goals of the firm. This focus on margin is a function of increased adoption of IT Systems that allow deeper insight into product performance on the brand and product level versus the obfuscated aggregate view that plagued organizations just 5 - 7 years ago. 041b061a72
